1: Do you and your partner feel comfortable in front of a camera?

Do you want to be fully guided on how to stand, where to put your hands, and where to look? Or do you want to be directed in a very posed way to create a moody vibe?

Maybe you feel comfortable in front of the camera, and nothing much changes for you. If so, awesome. Take note of that as you go forward in choosing your Crested Butte Photographer.

Crested Butte Photographer You Can Trust

If you do not feel comfortable in front of the camera, you need to feel comfortable with who is behind the camera. You have to be able to trust your photographer. If you left your consultation call feeling awkward, maybe that Crested Butte Photographer is not the right personality fit for you. That is OKAY. Not every photographer's personality will fit with every client. That is one of the many reasons why having multiple photographers to choose from is so necessary. Wait until you find a wedding or elopement photographer that you feel you can trust and are comfortable with. It really does come down to trust. These photos are important and you want to be able to walk through your day at peace, knowing that your photography is in good hands! Find a Crested Butte Photographer that you can trust.

To go deeper on this topic.. every photographer has a different type of posing style. Read more into the next section- Style and Aesthetic, to determine what you are looking for in a photographer.

2: Style and Aesthetic

Do you have a particular style of photography that you like? AKA moody, warm, cool, "I LOVE GREEN," posed, documentary?

Photographers want you to FEEL the moment through visually looking at their photos. This mainly has to do with their composition and editing style. A few examples of editing styles in the photography world could be moody, filmy, earthy, natural tones, warm, cool, funky, direct flash, etc. Posing styles typically correlate with the editing style. For instance, if a photographer typically makes their photos look moody and warm then they might have you pose in a serious and sultry type of way. Or if your photographer captures all kinds of colors that incorporate all sorts of feels/moods through their images, they may pose you in a very non-traditional, playful type of way.

*Note these are not ALWAYS statements. There are many unique artists out there that combine different editing styles and posing techniques depending on the portrayal of emotion that they are trying to emote via their images from that particular session. So don't think I am trying to put people in boxes, this is more of a personal bias statement due to the fact that often editing style is correlated with posing techniques. One thing to watch out for: with how many editing presets are available for photographers to buy and use, it is easy for them to jump into the "professional world" quickly without the experience and effort of discovering their own style for themselves. So make note of not just the coloring of the image but also the composition itself. The better/more consistent and professional looking compositions, often reveal the experience of the photographer.

Before you begin your search, identifying the photography style that appeals to you is crucial. Photographers often have unique approaches ranging from candid, documentary-style images, more posed family portraits and even blurry artistic styled images.

When reviewing potential Crested Butte Wedding or Elopement Photographers' portfolios, pay close attention to:

  • How they frame their subjects

  • Their use of lighting

  • The emotions conveyed in their images

Other details to note:

Do you like the look of flash photography?

Do you like the look of grainy, under the lights and after dusk, dark photos?

Do you like grain or do you want your images to feel soft?

Let's talk about documentary style

Let's be real here.. Documentary style doesn't necessarily mean candid. If you are a model and you know how to "work it," GREAT. Your candid photos will look amazing. But honestly, most people don't look photogenic just standing there, especially when they notice a camera is pointed at them. No offense to anyone but often it's just a reality. So find a photographer that keeps you moving, communicates well and makes you feel comfortable. When you move freely and comfortably, you are naturally photogenic. Not when you are left wondering what you should do next. You should feel guided throughout the session to be naturally YOU. Find yourself that type of photographer.

For instance, if you love vibrant colors and natural settings, look for wedding or elopement photographers whose work showcases those elements. Ensuring their style aligns with your vision for your day, in the end leading to more fulfilling results.

When it comes down to it. You must understand that when you pick a Crested Butte Wedding Photographer, you are picking their unique style, personality and in the end, you are choosing to trust them with their art. Why ask the photographer to change their style and tell them you want your photos edited a different way? Your photographer should be willing to listen to your ideal and vision beforehand and do their best to bring that to life in post production.

But you can't expect that photographer to be something that they are not.

Nonetheless, if you are asking your photographer to change their vibe or editing style, make sure you are understanding what you are asking. Know then that your ideal will no longer match the photographer's ideal. If it is a huge difference in editing and style, maybe consider looking for another Crested Butte Elopement Photographer that fits your style better. Some photographers may be open to changing their style a bit for you, but ultimately it will still be edited to that photographer's standards. They might believe it to be considered "good" and you may not be on the same page as them. In conclusion, make sure you like the photographer as a whole before you sign the papers!
